Curioso ver o tema empreendedorismo surgir em conversa pouco menos de duas semanas depois de o ter estado a discutir com outros portugueses aqui em Boston... Mais curioso ainda trazer à tona precisamente um dos aspectos referidos na mesma conversa: o egoísmo do português!

É precisamente isso que vejo na atitude da Raquel Varela quando se dirige ao Martim com as suas perguntas agressivas - claramente feitas num tom de quem espera que o interluctor se espalhe ao comprido - completo e profundo egoísmo!

Mas como é possível que um rapaz de 16 anos tenha conseguido criar uma empresa e que ainda por cima dá lucro?! Impossível... Certamente que há alguma coisa de errado com isto! Os produtos devem vir de fábricas chinesas/paquistanesas onde os trabalhadores têm condições de trabalho miseráveis!

E agora pergunto eu... e se viessem?! O Martim era menos empreendedor por isso?! Mas onde está na definição da palavra empreendedor a ideia de Madre Teresa de Calcutá?! Seria menos admirável é certo... mas convenhamos... não me venham cá com hipocrisias porque todos nós recorremos frequentemente a produtos provenientes precisamente dessas mesmas fábricas e que "atire a primeira pedra" quem nunca o fez!

Felizmente não é o caso e os meus parabéns ao Martim por isso...

E depois como lhe correu mal e teve uma resposta que claramente não estava a espera, em vez de se deixar estar, não... continou a dar tiros nos pés com o comentário do ordenado minimo! Triste!

Mas se pensam que foi só aqui que vi sinais do egoísmo português... infelizmente não foi! Outro sinal claro deste mesmo fenómeno foram precisamente os comentários que surgiram em torno do assunto em que muitas pessoas fizeram questão de aproveitar esta triste intervenção da Raquel Varela para tirar prestígio ao seu cargo académico.

É óbvio que é triste que ela enquanto professora universitária - que diariamente contacta com jovens - seja a primeira a por as garras de fora quanto ao sucesso do Martim, mas isto não significa que se possa tirar mérito ao que ela própria alcançou e muito menos se generalize a uma classe um comentário menos bem conseguido de um dos seus membros.

Curious how the theme of entrepreneurship comes up in conversation little less than two weeks after I've discussed it with other Portuguese here in Boston... More curious yet is how it brought up precisely one of the aspects mentioned in the same conversation: the Portuguese selfishness!

That is precisely what I see in Raquel Varela's attitude when she addresses Martim in a such aggressive way - clearly ​​in a tone of one who expects her interlocutor to give the wrong answer - complete and profound selfishness!

But how did a 16 year old boy managed to create a company and even more a lucrative one?! That's impossible.. Surely there's something wrong! The products must come from Chinese/Pakistani factories where the working conditions are miserable!

And now I wonder... what if they came?! Was by any chance Martim less of an entrepreneur if so?! But where in the definition of the word entrepreneur is the idea of Mother Teresa of Calcutta?! It would certainly be less admirable of him that's for sure... but even thought... Let's not be hypocrites and pretend we don't all often enough use and buy products from precisely these same factories and "let the first stone be cast" by those who never did!

Fortunately that's not the case and my congratulations to Martin...

And then when she got an answer she was clearly not expecting, instead of letting it go, no... she kept on going and shooting her own feet with that comment on the minimum wage! Sad!

But if you think that was the only sign of the Portuguese selfishness... unfortunately it wasn't! Another clear sign of the same phenomenon was how so many people, in several comments that emerged around this issue, tried to take prestige out from Raquel Varela's academic post because of her sad intervention.

It is to regret that she as a university professor - who has daily contact with young people - is the first to show her claws on Martim's success, but this does not mean that you can take merit to what Raquel herself has achieved, much less generalize a bad comment of one of it's members to an entire class.
